Charles Li


Mr. Charles Li is Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx). Mr. Li has 20 years experience in the financial services sector, including corporate and securities law practices, corporate finance and advisory services in Hong Kong, MainlandChina, andNew York.


From 1980 to 1984, Mr. Li studied in the Department of Foreign languages and Literatures atXiamenUniversity, where he also met his future wife.


He obtained a BA degree in English literature from Xiamen University in 1984, an MA degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1988, and a JD degree from Columbia University School of Law inNew Yorkin 1991. He worked as an offshore oil worker in the North China Sea prior to college, and a newspaper editor-reporter forChina Dailyfrom 1984 to 1986.


Before joining HKEx, Mr. Li was chairman of J.P. Morgan China. Mr. Li has also worked for Merrill Lynch and was president of Merrill LynchChina. Before moving to Merrill Lynch in 1994, he practiced law inNew Yorkwith Davis Polk & Wardwell and Brown & Wood.


Mr. Li has served as Chief Executive of HKEx since 2010. In this role, Mr. Li has orchestrated some of the most significant strategic initiatives in HKEx’s history, including the expansion into fixed income, currency and commodities through the acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012 and the launch of OTC Clear in 2013, as well as enhanced mutual market access with Mainland China through Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and other cooperation.
