CFLC Hosts Journalism Workshop for German Majors
  Time: 2016-06-27 Author: clicks:

On May 13-15, CFLC hosted a workshop on the media coverage of immigration issues for 14 students majoring in German at Fudan and Xiamen Universities. The workshop was organized by Nina Linkel, a German-language instructor who has been recruited by the Robert Bosch Stiftung to teach at Xiamen University.

At the workshop, the students took classes in interviewing, question setting, news writing, and other aspects of both print and online journalism. They also learned about how to cover immigration issues and conducted mock interviews. The lessons were conducted by Chinese and German media professionals.

Urs Luger, an Austrian teacher who currently teaches at Fudan University, lectured at the workshop. In his lecture, he compared the different news reports in German-speaking countries on the same refugee issue, showing the students how the media deviated from the truth and how objectivity could be maintained.

Other instructors for the workshop included Xie Bei, managing editor of the German edition of Beijing Review, and Sonja Peteranderl and Natalie Mayroth, recipients of the 2016 China-German Media Ambassador Fellowships of the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Through mock interviews, they demonstrated interviewing and information gathering techniques to the students.

During the workshop, the students also interviewed, via video link, Peng Dawei, head of the Berlin bureau of the China News Agency. Mr. Peng talked about the operations of his bureau and his own career in journalism. The students interviewed a Syrian refugee via the Internet as well.

The workshop was well received by students with aspirations for a career in journalism.
