On June 5-6, 2021, the national finals of the 23rd “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National Collegiate English Debate Contest took place online. Luo Hanyu and Zhao Runzhou, two third-year English majors from CFLC, won the third prize.
The 23rd “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National English Debate Contest for University Students was organized by Beijing Foreign Studies University and staged jointly by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), China Foreign Language Assessment Center, and Beijing Foreign Studies Online Digital Technology Co., Ltd. This year’s competition attracted thousands of debaters from more than 400 colleges and universities across China.
The Contest stretched over months and consisted of multiple rounds of intense competitions. CFLC was responsible for organizing the preliminary competitions at XMU, which drew more than 130 students from over 20 majors. After two rounds of competition at XMU, Luo Hanyu and Zhao Runzhou, both third-year English majors at CFLC, emerged triumphant, advancing to the South China regional competitions and finally to the national finals.
Modeled after the British parliamentary system, the FLTRP English Debate Contest is highly competitive event. Coached by CFLC instructor Sun Li and with technical support from Mr. Lin Feimu, the CFLC contestants shone in the intense finals which lasted 20 hours over two days, turning in an impressive performance.
Since its inauguration 23 years ago, the “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National English Debate Contest has evolved into one of the most prominent competitions of its kind in China. It has been included in the list of major collegiate academic competitions by the Higher Education Society of the Ministry of Education. The Debate has been recognized by the academic community for its significant role in inspiring university students to enhance their English proficiency, communicative competence and global vision.
